The peonies came over on the autumn boat from the mainland, the year the ferry stopped running in winter. Nobody on Skerra had grown anything so red. Old Anna Figgis kept them behind the net shed where the salt could not reach, and she would not sell a root to anyone who asked twice.

Her grandson Tom came every Sunday to carry water up from the well. He was the only one who saw the flower open in the dark, a pink cup pushing through the frost with its petals folded over one another like cloth laid by a careful woman. He said the middle looked like an eye painted green and gold, keeping watch over the boats.

When the gales came in February, the boats stayed on their moorings for nine days and the bread ran out. Anna went out at dusk with a knife, cut the best bloom, and carried it down to the harbour wall. She set it in a jar of seawater on the stones. By morning the fog had lifted, and the men could see the rocks again and bring the boats in.

Nobody thanked her. The peony was dead by the next week, its edges gone brown, but Tom kept the jar on the windowsill. Every spring since, he has walked out to the shed before first light and waited for the first red edge to show.
