Every autumn the miller's daughter at Hollin Edge left a dish of hazelnuts on the stump where the forest path met the last field, and every autumn the nuts were gone by morning. Her father said it was squirrels. She said squirrels did not leave the bowl turned over.

The creature that took them was no higher than a boot, yellow as a late crab apple, with ears tipped black like burnt bread and a tail cut in the shape of a lightning bolt. It carried a round ball under one arm, half red and half white, with a dark band across its middle that it would not let anyone touch. The old women in the village said it had been sent from the deep wood to guard something. The children said it had run away from its own mother. Nobody agreed.

One wet night in late October the girl waited with a lantern under the oak. The creature came out, saw her, and froze with its cheeks flushed red as if it had been caught stealing jam. She did not shout. She set the bowl down and sat with her back against the trunk. After a long while it sat too, set the ball between its feet, and opened its mouth to say something no one could make out, and the sound it made was a kind of laugh.

They kept meeting until the frost came. In spring the ball was gone from the stump, and in its place lay a single hazelnut with a small mark cut into the shell in the shape of a lightning bolt. Her father kept it in a tin on the windowsill. He never once asked where the creature had gone, and the bowl stayed on the stump all the same.
