Four stacked cats in one line
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows four cats stacked vertically, each lying in a relaxed pose with limbs and tails trailing. It is built from one continuous black line with no shading, so the forms are defined only by the contour. The plain white background and single colour make the composition sit cleanly on the page.

Nobody aboard the Halcyon Vane admitted to feeding the cats, which is how the four of them came to be stacked on the warm lid of the range every morning like washing someone had forgotten to fold. Mrs Okonedo called them the Committee. Biscuit lay at the bottom, a ginger tom who had come aboard at Falmouth and never got off. Above him sat Tansy, then the grey one we called Mister, and at the top the little black queen who had decided that the highest point of any room was hers.

I was third cook that winter, which meant I scrubbed the pans nobody wanted and carried the slops up the ladder twice a day. When the swell came up in the Bay and the crockery walked across the shelves, the stack never wobbled. The cats simply stretched into one long line, tails hanging over the edge like bell ropes, and went back to sleep.
The night the mutton caught, I was alone with the smoke. I knocked the kettle reaching for a damp cloth, and the whole Committee came off the range in one yowling heap, past me and out through the scuttle. I stood coughing with my eyes streaming, certain I had lost them. Then Mrs Okonedo came down from the deck, looked at the smoke, looked at the empty lid, and said the cats always knew before the rest of us when something was wrong.
They were back on the range by dawn, stacked again, Biscuit at the bottom and the black queen at the top, as if nothing had happened. I have cooked on four ships since and two kitchens ashore, and I still make the first brew of the day with one hand on the warm metal, waiting for something soft to climb my sleeve.
