I was the new fruit man, three pitches down, and my awning was already sagging by seven o'clock on the first wet Saturday, so I did what anyone would do and wheeled my pears under her canvas.

She didn't say thank you. She looked at the puddles pooling in my cardboard and then at the sky, which was doing its best to drown us both, and she made a noise like a kettle. Then she took a marker from her apron and drew a cat on the back of a crate lid. Round face, a bow the size of a dinner plate, eyes narrowed as if she'd already heard my prices. 'Stand where she can see you,' she said. 'Rain doesn't care who was first.'

By nine the pears were sold and the cat was taped to my scales. Customers laughed at it. A boy with a buggy asked if it was rude, and Mrs Okonedo, without looking up from her Gouda, raised two hands and folded the middle fingers down with a slow, theatrical care that made the whole row cackle.

I took the lid home that night, scrubbed it dry on the radiator, and kept it on the wall above the till. Every wet morning since, I nod at her across the lanes before I unpack. She still never says thank you. She just holds up the cat, and I know the pitch is ours to share.
