Pin-up figure with roses and banners
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A stylised woman in a leopard print outfit leans back holding a long wand, with her hair swept up and a red pendant at her neck. Bold black outlines and flat fills define the figure, with cream ribbon banners carrying words, two clusters of red roses, and brown blocks arranged around her. The design is centred on a plain green background, with the colours of the figure, roses and banners balanced across the composition.

The amplifier in the Palais has been humming since the Tuesday rehearsal, and Mr Okafor says it's only the valves warming up, so you leave it be and go on pinning the green paper streamers to the balcony rail. Somebody has to. The hall smells of floor polish and the stew from the kitchen downstairs, and the posters for Saturday say SUPER GREEN NIGHT in letters bigger than the band's name.

Nobody in Dalston knows what it means, though the plasterer's boy swears it's a cure for damp. Your aunt Vera says it's a new dance, the sort where you stand still and let the floor do the work. You don't argue. You are seventeen and you have a programme stuffed in your back pocket with one name written on it in pencil.
On the night the hall fills faster than the doormen can count. The singer comes on in a leopard-print suit that catches the blue lights, leaning back on a long silver stand as if it were a lamp-post she'd known all her life. The crowd roars. The hum from the amplifier climbs to a crackle, the lights along the rail flicker, and someone shouts HOT, and then the whole hall is shouting it, until the bulb above the stage pops and the room goes dark for one clean second.
In the dark you find her hand on the stand. She is laughing, but not at you. "Hold that," she says, and you do. When the lights come back she has already moved on, and you are left gripping the rail with a streamer of green paper wound round your wrist, which is how you will remember the night every time someone asks what it was like.
