The canteen clock said twenty past six when Mags Dunning switched off her rivet gun and untied the red spotted cloth from her hair. Nobody on the south floor of Carrow Works had ever seen the line stop before the whistle. The noise took a long time to die, like a dog that did not want to lie down.

Foreman Halloran came down the gangway with his clipboard pressed to his chest. 'Get your head back in the game, Dunning,' he said. She pointed the cloth at the chalkboard where the week's piece rates were written in his careless capitals. 'My sister's on nights for fourteen shillings less than Pat Doyle, and you've been writing that number down for a month.' Someone at the back laughed. Someone else started clapping, slow, like the end of a hymn.

By seven the whole floor had tied on something red, a scarf, a hanky, a strip torn from a ration sack, and the stairwell smelt of oil and wet wool. Mags rolled her sleeve to the elbow and took the carpenter's pencil from behind her ear. Across the muscle of her upper arm she wrote the only two words the foreman had ever used that she believed, then a small heart at the end because it made her sister laugh. Nessa leaned in to check the spelling and said it would wash off in a fortnight.

Halloran looked at the arm for a long time. Then he took the pencil out of Mags's fingers and underlined it twice.
