Winking pin-up with polka dot bow and banner

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A coloured drawing of a pin-up woman with dark blue hair in victory rolls, wearing a red and white polka dot bow and red hoop earring. She winks with one eye, rests her chin on her bare shoulder, and wears a yellow collar. The bold black outlines and flat fills sit above a white banner with NEVER AGAIN in black capitals.

Dear Terry,

The rye has been proving since four and I still haven't knocked it back, which is more than I managed for you. The flour bin still has your name on it in my marker, the one you said looked like a ransom note. I haven't scrubbed it off. Scrubbing is for people who want to forget, and I have plenty of memory, most of it floury.

You left on a Tuesday in the van with the dodgy wing mirror, and I stood in the doorway in my apron with the polka dot bow you bought me at the Bexhill market, the one I only wore for you. I told myself I'd take it off once the door shut. I didn't. I've rolled my hair up under it every morning since, and every morning the bow sits there like a dare.

Last Thursday a man in a good coat asked for a dozen Chelsea buns and a word with the owner. I gave him the buns. He had your smile, or what I'd sworn was your smile, and I felt nothing at all except the wish that my hands were full of tray. So I winked at him over the counter, the way you always said I should save for emergencies, and I watched it land and then I watched it go.

I have chalked two words on the board above the till, under the price of the custard slices: NEVER AGAIN. Customers think it's a joke about the sponge. It is, a little. Don't write back. The oven is hot, the bin still says your name, and I have bread to pull out before the light comes up.
