The eagle came back to the Shelter Stone this morning, the same grey-backed bird that nested above the pass when you were still climbing for fun. I had the kettle on and the hut door open, and it sat on the fence post looking at me as if I owed it rent. I have decided it is the only sensible creature left in Glen Harrow, so I have stopped arguing with it.

The post was the thing I meant to tell you about. Mr Abernethy came up on Thursday with the sacks, and the wind took his cap clean off the ridge. Before I could swear, Nell from the lower farm had her golden rope out, swung it twice and hooked the cap out of the air as neat as a fishwife landing a trout. She said her grandmother taught her the trick with washing lines, and I believed her, because nobody in this valley lies about rope.

There is a new poster pinned inside the bothy door, a bold blue and red thing with a lady in stars across the top and the words Liberty, Truth, Justice curling over her head. Someone has scribbled underneath in pencil: mind the pass, and come home. I read it every time I go for the kindling.
