Dear Win,

We pitched on the common at Wendover on Tuesday, and Mr Harrow has given me the big canvas for the Venus booth again, the one with the fern fronds that always split down the middle in the damp. I spent three evenings on it with the lamp hung off the tent pole. He wanted the girl turned away from the crowd, so the punters see her head and the fern first and have to pay sixpence to find out what she's looking at. I told him that was cheap. He said it was trade.

Mavis from the coconut shy came to watch me mix the green. She said I'd made the roses too honest, that a rose on a pair of shorts ought to look like it was wilting on purpose. So I painted them again, blurred at the edges, and she nodded and went off to sell ices.

The last night at Wendover a boy of about nine stood at the front of the booth with his mouth open. Harrow shooed him off, but I waved him back and gave him the spare brush with the frayed tip. He painted a single black stocking up the bottom edge, badly, and was so proud of it that I didn't have the heart to tell him Harrow would paint over it by morning.

It's still there, Win. Under the fresh coat, I can see it when the light comes through the canvas. Write soon and tell Mum I'm eating.

Love, Nell
