Pin-up acrobat on an aerial hoop
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A pin-up style woman with dark curled hair and red lips hangs from a green aerial hoop by one arm, body arched and legs extended. Bold black outlines, solid fills and simple shading give the figure a classic traditional look, with a red skirt, yellow trim and a yellow rope at the top. Black scrollwork and motion lines surround the hoop on a plain white background.

The hall at Carrow Bay had a ceiling hook that nobody was allowed to use except Nell Harrow, and she used it on Saturdays when the band stopped for the interval. Her father had bolted it into the beam himself, the summer the fair came through and left the travelling hoop behind in lieu of wages. The hoop had been painted green once. Now it was mostly brass where hands had gripped it.

Everyone in Carrow knew the rope was yellow because her mother had dyed it with onion skins. Nell would climb to the hoop with the rope fed through her hands, hook one arm over the rim, and let her body fall back until her legs opened out like a pair of scissors. The men at the bar stopped talking. The women stopped pretending not to watch. Nobody paid for the look, but the hat went round anyway.
Dunstan Vell, who owned the mill and the hall and most of the mortgages in between, decided one wet spring that a girl who hung in the air ought to be married to someone who could keep her on the ground. He sent a clerk with a ring and a sealed promise of a cottage with a proper floor. Nell took the ring to the hall and hung from the hoop while he read the terms aloud.
She did not come down. She swung until the rope creaked and dust fell on the dancers, then she let go of the rim and dropped her hat into his hands with the ring inside it. Keep the floor, she said. I have the air. She went out through the high window onto the roof, and the hoop stayed on its hook, turning slowly, while the mill owner stood beneath it with the whole town looking up.
