Dora Lillie remembered her as the girl who went into Hollin Wood at dinner time and came out with burrs in her hair and a length of silver thread wound round one wrist. The thread never came off. Teachers tried. Her mother tried with the nail scissors. It kept growing into the pattern you see on the hall window in the dust, lines rising off the shoulders like the curl of young bracken.

She did not dance. She stood by the coat rack and let the draught from the door lift her hair into loops, and when Dora asked what the fairies had wanted from her, she said plainly, "They wanted what we left behind. Your ribbon. Your lost shoe. Your first tooth in a matchbox. They keep the lost things so the children can come back for them."

Then she unwound the thread from her wrist, slowly, and gave a loop of it to each of them. Dora felt it cold as well water against her palm. She looked down and saw a small brass key she had lost in the wood the summer she was nine, hanging on the silver as if it had always been there.
