The fog comes up Hesp Gap the way it always does, from the sheep side first, and by the time you've wiped the counter the bottom step of the caff has disappeared. You set six glass bottles of cola on the sill anyway. Nobody buys pop in fog, Mam used to say, but she also said nobody climbs the Gap in fog for a sensible reason, so you keep the kettle going for both of you.

The car arrives at half four with its hazards blinking as if it has something to apologise for. A young man in a donkey jacket comes in asking for a phone, and when you point at the old black landline he laughs, because the lines up here are in the same state as the road. There's a dagger inked along the back of one hand and a ring of roses across his knuckles, and he keeps turning the bottle you give him in his fingers without drinking it. You ask what he's carrying. He says a crate of gravestone rubbings for a man in Llanfair who isn't around anymore, and that he's been driving since Shrewsbury to hand it over.

You know that crate. Your father bought the same slate from the same quarry in 1971, and it's still in the back shed under a tarpaulin with your name chalked on the side. You don't say so. You fill his flask, tell him the pass clears by six if the wind holds, and watch his taillights drop down into the white like a pair of matches going out one at a time.

At six the wind does hold. On the step there's a bottle, unopened, and a paisley bandana folded neatly, left there for you to find.
