Pinup woman with cigarette and roses

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A bobbed-haired woman rests her chin on her hand while holding a cigarette, wearing a pearl necklace and red lipstick. Bold black outlines and smooth flat fills define the features, with soft shading on the face and hands. Teal roses decorate her arms and shoulder against a cream background, with a pink sun and black rays behind her head.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Dorothy Pask came into the shop on the Thursday before the wedding carrying her pearls in a Woolworths bag, which told me what she thought of them. Eleven strands of knotted cream, the clasp gone green, and a look on her face as if she'd carried a dead bird in.

"Can you make them decent by Saturday?" she said. "Our Carol's marrying a bus conductor, and I want the photographs to look like money."

I took them to the back bench where the lamp was kinder and began unpicking the knots with a bodkin. The wireless played dance band behind me and the kettle ticked on the gas. Halfway down the third strand I found a gold bead no bigger than a lentil, and tucked beneath it a slip of paper gone soft as cloth. In a careful hand it read: For Dot, who never once let me win at cards. Pearls for the day you have to stand up in front of everyone. Ted.

I knotted the strands back up, one silk loop at a time, and said nothing when she came for them on Friday evening. She fastened them herself in the mirror, tilted her chin up, and walked out to the step with her cigarette case in hand. I watched through the window as she lit up, turned the pearls once between her fingers, and smiled at the street as though it had been told a secret. Some things you mend without asking what they were holding together.
