Wonder Woman portrait on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm, dominated by a comic-book style portrait of Wonder Woman with blue-grey hair, a gold tiara and red lips. Smaller figures of Wonder Woman with a lasso, a dove and outlined stars sit around the portrait, with a red, white and blue flag motif behind them. Bold red, yellow and blue ink is layered with grey shading and black outlines, and the composition fills the arm from shoulder to elbow.

The reunion was in the function room above the Crown in Stockport, and Gemma Platt still had the same laugh, which I hadn't expected. We were the only two in Year Nine who could draw a decent lasso, and she spent every maths lesson filling the back of her exercise book with a golden rope that looped around the margins as if it had somewhere better to be.

Mr Hadley caught her once and made her read the page aloud. She didn't blush. She said Wonder Woman never got told off for doodling, because the lasso of truth made people say what they really thought, and he could hardly argue with that. He sent her out to stand in the corridor for ten minutes anyway, and she came back with a star inked on her hand in biro, pressed flat like a rubber stamp.
At the bar she showed me the old book, which her mum had kept in a biscuit tin. Somebody had drawn a white dove on every page, wings spread, and beside each one a small red-skirted figure holding the rope up as though it might fly off without her. 'You always said I'd grow out of it,' she said. 'I didn't. I just got better at the rope.'
Outside, the taxis were lining up on the wet road. I took the book home under my arm, and on the bus I counted the stars in the margins, twelve on the first page and fourteen on the last, as if she had been adding them one at a time all those years to keep track of something I was never meant to see.
