Blonde doll with scissors and pink car

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A colour realism tattoo on the forearm shows a blonde, doll-like woman with blue eyes and red lips against a teal background. She wears a pink leopard print outfit and holds silver scissors, with a pink car drawn below her. Smooth shading and bright pink and blue tones give the piece a glossy, polished finish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Plunkett kept her grandmother's scissors in a tin of talc and would not let anyone else touch the cutting chair until the Thursday trade had gone. Outside the window of her salon on Quay Street, a pink car idled at the kerb with its engine ticking, and Vonnie Adair sat in the mirror-lit chair with a glossy catalogue open across her knees.

"I want it like the one on the cover," Vonnie said, tapping a photograph of a woman with platinum waves and a leopard print dress. "Same shine. Same everything."

Marjorie studied the picture for a long moment. The woman in it had been painted, not grown, and no pair of scissors in Dorset could give anybody that kind of finish. "Hair doesn't do shine like that," she said. "Hair does split ends and weather, and then it does what it likes."

She cut anyway, slowly, the blades whispering close to Vonnie's ear while the radio on the shelf murmured about tides. Vonnie watched herself in the glass and, somewhere between the fringe and the nape, stopped asking for anything. When it was finished she turned her head one way and then the other, and said it was less glamorous than she'd wanted, but it was hers.

Marjorie swept the clippings into a dustpan. Vonnie drove off down the seafront with her window open and her leopard coat snapping in the wind, and in the chair a single pale curl lay where it had fallen, bright as a question nobody had asked.
