Pin-up woman with feathers on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo on the thigh shows a woman seen from behind and over one shoulder, with a rose and feathers in her hair and a feathered halo behind her. Soft grey shading and fine dark linework model the skin, hair and plumage, with ornamental scrollwork below her. The design is entirely black and grey and fills most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The feather fan had lost three quills since the ferry, and Marguerite Sallow was the only seamstress left on Vell who knew how to restring a plume without the whole thing shedding over the stage. You sit on an upturned crate behind the Lantern Hall and pick the grey barbs apart with a bone needle, one by one, while the band tunes up through the wall.

Mrs Sallow says the costume is for the Saturday revue, the one the harbour men come to watch with their caps on their knees. The headdress needs a rose at the temple, paper silk gone soft from the damp, and a strand of seed pearls to be sewn down the back where the spotlight never quite reaches. She tells you to stop fidgeting. She tells you the pearls must be counted twice, because the last girl who wore them lost one in the sea and swore the tide had taken it as a wish.

On Saturday the headdress goes up under the lamps and the feathers lift behind the dancer like a tide drawn back. Nobody in the hall looks at the seams. Afterwards, when the harbour men have gone home and the girl has changed into a borrowed cardigan, you find the twenty-third pearl caught in the lining, still warm from the lamp. You could hand it to Mrs Sallow. You could drop it off the harbour wall. Instead you stitch it into the cuff of your own coat, where nobody will think to count it.
