Pin-up woman smoking within a floral oval
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A coloured illustration of a stylised woman in a teal blouse with a polka-dot collar and a brown tartan skirt, holding a cigarette while smoke curls above her head. She stands in an oval frame with a pink gradient background, a red zigzag line, and a border of black hatching. Bold black outlines define the figure, and red and yellow flowers with green leaves sit at the lower left and right.

Dear Win, Mr Penhallow has finally let me paint something other than cracked buoys. The Dorcas Anne goes out on Monday and he wants a girl on the wheelhouse door, smoking, in the teal jumper I made from the remnants of Mrs Trevithick's curtains. I've given her a tartan skirt cut from the same bolt as your winter coat, so you'll know it when you see the boat.

The red line is the difficult part. He wanted the depth finder trace, the zigzag the sounder draws on its paper roll, because he says the sea talks in that shape and he can read it better than the Bible. I painted it in red lacquer because black vanished against the grey paint in the spray. Every morning I go down to the quay with a brush and a tin and touch up the bits the salt has eaten, and the old men on the bench tell me she looks like she's about to say something rude.
Yesterday the Dorcas Anne came in with a broken shackle and a boy with his hand split open. Nobody was dead, though the lad fainted before the doctor arrived. Penhallow stood on the gangway with his cap in his fist and looked at the zigzag, still wet and crooked where I'd rushed it, and said nothing for a long time. Then he asked me to make the line steadier. I told him the sea would have to wait its turn.
I can't tell you why it matters to me that he trusts a painted line more than the printed chart, but it does. Come down at Easter. Bring the scissors, though not the good ones this time. Your loving sister, Edie.
