Red bloom with green leaves and pink centre

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A round floral design made of several layers of rounded red-orange petals, each marked with curved black lines, surrounding a ring of green leaves. The centre has a pink and white petalled flower with a green disc at its middle. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills give it a classic flash sheet look, with the design set against a plain white background.

Sit down, the lot of you, before that mule gets its feet under it. You want the story of the bloom on Hollin Pass, or you want to stand there stamping your boots? Good. Then listen. Two summers back, when the snow lay late on the saddle, a carter called Teodor Marr came over with a load of rock salt and a daughter who would not stop talking.

The bloom grew in the walled garden above the inn at Grey Cairn, where the monks had planted poppies and brought up dahlias from somewhere warmer. Teodor's wife had died in the thaw before, and the garden had gone to nettles. The girl, Ilse, pulled the weeds with her bare hands and found under them one flower, red as a shut door, its petals cupped like hands holding water. At its heart sat a ring of pale pink petals, a crown of white buttons, and a green stone in the middle, cool as a well.

Now the trouble. That bloom opened only when the wind came off the pass, and it closed tight as a fist whenever a liar walked past. Ilse did not believe it, so she tested it on a tinker who swore his cart carried nothing but pots. The petals folded shut before he reached the gate. He sat on the wall and wept and confessed to three bolts of smuggled wool hidden under the pots. He paid the toll, the bloom opened wide, and the green stone shone like a coin.

So if you are going over tomorrow with something sewn into your coat, take the long way round by the cairn. The flower's still up there, and it has not forgotten a single face.
