Pin-up woman tattoo on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman wearing a pink t-shirt and black leather skirt, with her face cropped out of frame, shows a tattoo on her outer forearm. The tattoo depicts a dark-haired pin-up woman in a red dress, drawn with bold outlines and solid fills. Red, black and skin tones make up the colour, set against a plain pale background.

Dear Ivy,

The thaw has finally given up, and the yard is a soup of mud and frozen hoof-prints. I am writing this at the kitchen table with my boots still on, because Dad is sulking about the cold range and I would rather freeze than listen to him.

You will not believe who came to look at the bull on Tuesday. Gerald Tallis, the one who went to sea before the war. He had his sleeve rolled up while he held the gate, and there was a girl on his forearm in a red frock, black hair pinned up, bold black lines round her as if someone had cut her out of tin. He said a lad in Portsmouth drew her for him with a needle and a pot of ink the night before his ship sailed, and that she has looked after him ever since. I told him she looked more like she was waiting for a dance than for a sailor.

He laughed and said the dress was the only red he had seen in three years that wasn't blood or rust. Then the bull kicked the gate, he went flying into the muck, and I had to haul him up by the belt. Dad said nothing, which for him is practically a sonnet.

Anyway, I have decided to paint the barn door red come spring, and if you tell Mother I am getting ideas above my station, I will deny every word. Write soon and tell me what you wore to the dance.

Love, Nell
