The red word came first, as you wanted. I wrote it on a square of card the size of a thumbnail, then copied it again and again until my hand stopped shaking. Love is a short word in the old alphabet, all curve and hook, and the red ink sank into the paper like a coal settling. The black word was harder. Life runs longer and wants to trail off the edge of the page, so I made the last letter lean back, the way the palms lean over the steps by the harbour when the meltemi blows. Your grandmother's shop sign had the same letters, painted over so many summers that nobody remembered they were there.

The stonemason's girl came up this morning with a brass stencil her father cut for the church door, and she asked if she could keep the spare offcut. I said yes. She wanted to know whether the words were a prayer or a shopping list, and I told her that was between the two people who had asked for them. She laughed and ran off down the hill with the metal glinting in her fist. I have kept the red bottle. When the boat finally lands, send word, and I will post you the black.
