Pin-up woman with cats on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman with voluminous curled black hair, red lips and pink cheeks is shown in profile-style pin-up styling, with an orange and a grey cat beside her and a third orange cat perched in her hair. A banner reading EAT LADY runs along the bottom of the design. The bold dark outlines and flat, shaded fills are set against purple clothing and orange and blue accents, and the tattoo sits on the upper arm beside the shoulder of a person in a white lace top.

Lilian Marsh had lived on the ninth floor of Crane House long enough to know the lift only worked on Tuesdays, and that the stairwell belonged to the cats. Most were ginger, with the odd grey who thought himself a gentleman. She fed them from a tin tray on the landing, and she set her hair every Friday so that nobody could accuse the building of letting its standards slip.

When the letter came from the housing office, typed on thick cream paper, it said the animals must be removed by the end of the month. Lilian read it standing up, then folded it into four and slid it into her apron pocket. Over her front door hung a banner her husband Ray had painted years before, orange and gold with black lettering, and it said EAT LADY because Ray had a sense of humour and a tin of sign paint going spare that week.
The cats came up the stairs that evening, one after another, as they always did. The big ginger one climbed to her shoulder and then to the top of her curls, where he sat like a crown and stared at the notice on the door. Lilian tipped the tray out and told them plainly what the council wanted. The grey tom sniffed at her pocket, worked the letter loose with his teeth, and carried it away down the concrete stairs, nine flights of it, one step at a time.
The bin men found it the next morning in the wheelie bin by the car park, chewed at one corner and soaked through with rain. Nobody from the office came back. Lilian said the cats had only wanted to read it properly before deciding. The lift still worked on Tuesdays, and the cats still ate first.
