Pin-up baker with pretzels and cupcakes

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A pin-up style woman with dark shoulder-length hair wears an orange baker's hat and sits among pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, two cupcakes and an orange scroll banner reading BAKER. Bold black outlines define the design, with grey shading in the hair and soft shading on the face and baked goods. The palette is orange, brown, teal, pink and red, arranged as a compact cluster across the upper arm.

Nobody in Ashford Edge goes past the stile after dark. The wood begins where the bakehouse lane gives out, and every hard winter since my great-grandmother's time the village has left a little bread on the stone for whoever keeps the trees. Usually it is eaten. Nobody had ever followed the crumbs.

I followed them anyway, lantern in one hand and Mum's copper-coloured hat pinned on over my hair for courage. The trail ended in a hollow under an old oak, where a woman sat on a fallen log with her dark hair set in soft waves and her lips painted the red of a cherry on a cake. Around her lay cookies, cupcakes in teal paper cases and a heap of knotted pretzels. A ribbon across her knees read BAKER in gold letters.

"Your mother was short on sugar," she said. "So am I. Bring me a proper batch on Friday and I will keep the wood from your door another year."

I went home and baked. On Friday the tray was empty and the hat was back on its hook, and the sign over our window had been repainted, the letters crisp and orange in the morning light.
