Woman profile in a hand mirror on a back
Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman in profile with dark curled hair, an orange flower in her hair and a strand of pearls is set inside an ornate gold hand mirror with scrollwork and a jewelled handle. An orange rose with green leaves sits at the left edge of the mirror frame. The bold black outlines and solid fills are shaded with soft red blush on the cheek and grey tones in the hair, with the composition centred across the upper back.

The mirror turns up in the bottom drawer of your grandmother's dresser the week the snow closes the lane, wrapped in a tea towel that smells of paraffin. You are sorting her things because the heating oil is dear and the house has to be emptied before the bank comes round. The frame has gone brassy at the edges, scrolled like a fern unrolling, and the handle ends in a jewelled knob with one stone missing.

Your grandmother never wore pearls on the farm, not once, so you cannot think where the strand in the glass came from. The woman in the mirror has her dark hair piled and curled, an orange bloom pinned above one ear, and she is gazing at the kitchen window rather than at you. Each morning at half six you carry the milk pail across the yard, and each morning you hold the mirror to the frosted pane to check your collar. Each morning she has turned a little further from you, the rose on the frame bright as a coal in the grey light.
On the last morning before the thaw, the pail freezes to the step and you go back indoors for the lamp. In the glass she is smiling, which she has never done by daylight, and the red on her cheek has spread as though she has been out in the cold a long while. You set the mirror face down on the table and go out to the barn without your coat.
When you come back at dusk, the mirror sits face up on the flagstones of the back step, its handle pointing towards the hill road. The snow around it is unmarked except for one line of small, neat prints leading away over the field gate.
