Pine cone and needles on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A pine cone sits at the centre of the design, with long pine needle sprigs curving across it and down the lower edge. The cone is shaded in browns fading into warm orange and yellow, with heavy black linework defining the needles and scales. A red and orange wash behind the cone suggests a sun or glow, and a partial orange shape is visible at the top edge of the frame.

Sit closer, all of you, and keep your hands out of the embers. The last boy who tried to catch the sun in his fist came home with his palm full of pitch and nothing else. So listen. Three winters back, when the sun was still young and hadn't learned to set properly, it slid down behind the ridge of Oros and got caught in the top branches of the old black pine that stood over the salt road.

It hung there all night, a red coin tangled in the needles, and the pine groaned under its weight. Every needle bent like a bowstring. The goatherd Mela climbed the trunk with a bronze knife between her teeth, meaning only to cut the sun loose so the valley could have its morning back. But the sun was heavy as a wet ewe, and when she reached it, its rind split and the light poured out in gold scales down the bark.
Where that light dried on the wood, the cone grew. That is why every cone in these hills looks like a sleeping sun, with its scales drawn tight around something warm, and why they still hold a little orange when you split them open at the hearth. Mela came down with nothing in her hands but one cone, while the sun, freed at last, rolled off over the sea and was late for the first time in all history. Some say it is late still.
