Colourful floral tattoo on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A vertical stack of flowers runs down the forearm, with a large coral bloom at the base, a smaller red flower above it and a closed bud at the top. Thick black outlines, flat fills and black flicks and dots frame the blooms, with blue-green leaves and small yellow dots adding accents. The tattoo is in bold colour on a plain background of skin and grey fabric, and the photo is taken at a slight angle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fleet put out on the ninth morning of the herring month, eleven boats with fresh paint on their bows, and Aud stood on the harbour wall until the last sail was a grey tooth on the water and then no sail at all.

Every boat in Skerrow wore the same three flowers at the bow. The big coral bloom was for the skipper's luck, the red one above it was for the crew, and the closed bud at the top was for whoever was still out there and not yet home. Aud had painted her husband's boat, the Sigrun, herself, with black flicks around the petals so the spray would look like light. When she came to the bud she set the brush down and sat on an upturned creel for an hour, and then she painted it shut.

The wind blew for four days. Boats came in one by one, and each time a wife climbed down to the shingle and opened her boat's bud with a dab of yellow, the way the custom said, and the harbour filled with small cheers. The Sigrun did not come. On the fifth morning Aud went down to the water with a pot of yellow paint and a fine brush, and she opened the bud on the Sigrun's empty bow, one dot at a time, until it looked like a flower that had only been waiting out the rain. Then she climbed back up the wall and watched the grey water, as if the flower might be a light a man could steer by.
