Marnie had been driving since the sun cleared the Sayre Flats, and the pale ribbon of smoke on the horizon had hung there for an hour before she admitted it wasn't heat shimmer. She pulled onto the gravel shoulder beside a fruit stand where a hand-lettered board read NO PICKING, SEED HEADS BY THE BUCKET. An old man in a folding chair watched her get out of the car without looking up from his crossword.

"Field burned last August," he said, nodding past the fence. "Didn't matter. They turned their faces east every morning anyway, stubborn as mules." He tapped a seed head on the arm of his chair. It was the size of a saucer, its dark spiral crosshatched like a fisherman's net, and someone had scratched 26 21 into the back of it with a nail. "Those were my wife's. Take one. She'd want the road to have something."

She bought it for two dollars she didn't have in coins, and drove on towards the smoke. It came from a crossroads where her brother's pickup sat with its door open and the keys still dangling from the ignition. There was no fire, only a thin green-grey plume curling up from the cab where something had smouldered and gone out. On the dash lay a folded receipt for seed and a single line in his blocky capitals: FOLLOW THE FACES EAST.

Marnie set the seed head on the passenger seat, its gold rim catching the light, and turned the car in the direction the flowers had been looking all along.
