Pine forest fading down a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall pine tree rises up the forearm, flanked by smaller conifers that fade into a soft forest silhouette. The tattoo uses black and grey ink with fine stippled shading that gradually lightens towards the wrist. A man's bare forearm is shown against a plain pale wall, with a gold wristwatch and dark blue trousers visible.

The dance hall sat where the plantation gave up, a tin-roofed barn at the foot of the hill where the Forestry men had planted their rows of spruce in the fifties and the rows had never quite reached the road. Nessa Glendinning was dancing with a sawmill man in a green dress, and she did not look up when you came in. Outside the windows the trees stood close, black near the top of the hill and paler lower down, and each time the door swung open the smell of resin rolled across the floor like a second partner. You crossed to the table by the urn and waited for the reel to finish.
When she finally came over she said you had walked the long way, through the top plantation. You said the short way ran past the old quarry, and you had no wish to meet anyone there. She laughed and handed you her gloves to hold. Beyond the lamplight the last trees faded from dark green to the colour of dishwater, then to nothing at all, as if the forest had simply run out of ink.
"Dance with me or don't," she said. You set the bag under the chair and stood. The fiddle started up, you took her hand, and through the glass the wood went on climbing the hill until the night swallowed the top of it.
