Pine forest on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A tall central pine tree rises up the forearm, flanked by smaller pines that fade into soft shading towards the wrist. The tattoo is rendered in a single blue ink with fine, textured linework and graded tones that give the trees depth. The forearm fills the frame against a plain pale wall, with a gold wristwatch and a pair of blue jeans visible at the edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ridge was already blue with dusk when the cart rolled in, and Ottilie Maunder was waiting at the gate with a lantern she did not light. "You'll want to count them before the frost does," she said. "Every spring someone counts them wrong and we lose a week arguing about it." You took the tally sheet from her hand, the paper gone soft from handling, and began at the foot of the slope where the old tree stood tallest, a central pine seeded before the sea walls went up. Its neighbours stepped down the hill in graded rows, each one a shade paler than the last, until the lowest saplings dissolved into a grey haze you could not count at all.

Ottilie had a theory about the haze. She said the trees were not fading but leaving, one at a time, walking down toward the river where the water still ran clean. You thought that was nonsense until you reached the thirty-first sapling and found its roots bare, the soil around it scraped and empty, a boot print pressed into the mud beside it, the heel worn down on one side the way a ranger's heel wears when she has walked the same ground for forty years.
You wrote thirty-one in the margin. Then the lantern light finally caught the ridge, and you saw a thirty-second, pale as breath, standing just past the fence line where no tree had stood that morning. The sheet said nothing about it. You did not tell Ottilie either, not that night.
At first light you walked back up with the sheet folded in your coat, meaning to correct it. The thirty-second was gone. In its place stood the thirty-first, roots whole again, its needles dusted with frost, and beside it the boot print had filled with fresh water, clear enough to show the sky.
