Pine forest fading into the wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm tattoo of tall pine trees in silhouette, with some branches and needle detail drawn in darker ink. The tree line sits higher on the arm and dissolves into soft grey shading towards the wrist, giving the impression of a forest mist. The image is in black and grey, taken at an angle with a wristwatch and a dark knitted jumper in view.

The fiddler had tuned twice before the mist came off the pines, and Mrs Gillies swore it rolled over the ridge every Saturday as if it had been invited. We kept the doors shut against it. Nobody wanted damp in their good shoes, and my father's sprung maple floor would cup and warp if the air got in underneath.

Tomas came up the glen road that autumn with a surveyor's chain over one shoulder and asked the price of a dance. He held a waltz as though he were measuring it. Near midnight the lamps began to dim from the bottom up, the way the lower trees on the hill go soft, until the pines along the ridge were only dark stems against a paler grey. He said the forest down there was fading, and he wanted to see its edge before it went altogether.
He slipped out through the side door before I could stop him, and I followed with the lantern to the step. The mist had swallowed the lower slopes. Above it the pines stood sharp and black, every needle drawn in, as if the hill were the only solid thing left. I called his name twice. Then he walked back out of the grey with his coat soaked through and a sprig of pine in his fist, smelling of cold resin, and said the trees had let him come only as far as the first branch.
I pinned that sprig above the door. The next Saturday the fiddler tuned once and started, and the mist sat outside the sill all night, grey and patient, not quite coming in.
