Last winter it died twice. Both times I dug it up, found the root still pale and firm, and put it back in. Now it stands a hand's height, dark and stubby, and the children from the lower sheds come to look at it the way you used to watch the fish in the cistern. They have no word for it but tree, and I haven't corrected them.

Come up at the thaw. Bring your hands, not your tools. I want you to see the shadow it makes at noon, the first shadow this valley has had in my lifetime. Tell the council I said so. Your aunt, Maud.
