Small fox tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple fox is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a single outline with a few shaded details on the tail and body. The linework is thin and dark black, with no colour. The hand is raised and softly lit, and the tattoo sits low on the wrist in the lower centre of the frame, with a blurred background of stacked logs.

The woodpile had shrunk by half before the snow stopped, and Maud Harrow counted the logs twice each morning, the way her father had taught her to count coins. Nobody could leave the inn at Hollin Gate until the pass was cleared, so the guests stayed, and the logs went on the fire one armful at a time.

The fox came on the third day of the blizzard, thin as a rake handle, sitting on the chopping block as if it had booked a room. Maud tossed it the heel of yesterday's loaf. It ate without looking at her, then slipped back under the gate and left a line of small prints across the yard, neat as stitches.
A surveyor from Carlisle, two sisters who argued about hymns, and a travelling clockmaker named Abel Price were the only guests left by the fifth night. Price found Maud at the stacked logs, splitting kindling by lantern light, and offered to mend the hinge on the woodshed in exchange for the story of the fox. She told him she had no story. He asked her to sit anyway, and for a while they listened to the logs settle in the grate.
By morning the drifts had softened and the fox was gone. The woodpile stood where she had left it, one log turned bark side up, its cut face pale and clean. When Maud swept the chips from the sill, she found a small paw print pressed deep into the frost, pointing down the road towards the pass.
