Small star cluster tattoo on a back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white double exposure shows a person seen from behind with long hair, bare shoulders and back. Blossom branches, bare trees and a hillside are layered over the figure, creating a soft, textured composition against a pale background. A small tattoo of dots joined by thin lines, resembling a constellation, sits on the right side of the lower back in black ink.

Dear Tomas, the roof of the north tower fell in over the winter, so I have moved my observing up the hill to the old orchard wall. The blossom came early this year, the almond trees gone pink before the frost had left the ditches, and the wind carries petals up the slope and over the stones like a spill of paper. Father's star chart is still in the chapel vestry, though the mice have had the corner with the Hunter. I have redrawn what I can remember of it on the back of a feed sack.

Last Tuesday I climbed to the broken battlement with the brass glass and a lantern I was not supposed to light. Mrs Gill from the lower farm saw the glow and sent her boy up with a pie. He left it at the gate and would come no closer, convinced the ruin is haunted. He may be right. The stones remember every siege, and at night they hum a little when the wind gets under them.

I found the seven stars I wanted, and then a faint eighth that Father always swore was only a smear on the glass. I joined them with a stick of charcoal, one line at a time, the way he taught us, so the shape would come off the sky and stay put. Then I went home and tried to sleep, but the petals kept tapping at the shutter like someone wanting in.

You asked whether anyone still looks up here. I do. Come home in spring and I will show you the eighth star myself, and you can tell me whether it is only a smear.
