Pine tree and mountains on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single pine tree stands on the left beside a pair of mountain peaks, with a small open circle above them on the right. The linework is thin and uniform, and the mountain slopes are filled with fine parallel hatching. The tattoo is solid black on pale skin against a dark, textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The king wanted his highlands drawn without fog, so I drew them the way the Survey Office has always drawn the Ostrey hills, in fine lines that a man could count with his thumb. Every slope took its hatching from the top down, and I kept the strokes so even that the ink never seemed to pool. My master Halvard used to say a map is a promise that the ground will hold still, and I believed him until the spring the Gap thaw came early.

The pine stood alone at the mouth of Sallow Gap, the only tree for three days' ride in any direction. Carters steered by it, and the widow Ilse who kept the waystation swore she could smell its resin from her kitchen. When the road washed out that April, I went up with a boy and a lamp to find it again, and the tree was still there, black against a sky the colour of wet slate. I drew it that night exactly as it stood, one stroke for each branch I could still see.

The king sent for the chart in May. He asked why the sun was no bigger than a button, and I told him the sun in those hills is always small, because it is only ever seen between clouds. He ordered it enlarged. I refused, which is the closest I have come to treason, and he let it stand because the tree was the thing he wanted to look at.

When the lords asked where the old road ran, I unrolled the chart on the council table and laid my finger on the pine. They laughed at me until they saw the mountains beside it, hatched so finely the snow seemed to be falling, and then nobody laughed at all.
