Pine trees on the back of an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of tall, thin pine trees of varying heights is tattooed vertically on the back of the lower leg, just above the ankle bone. The trees are drawn in fine black linework with some darker shading at the base and tips, and the design is rendered entirely in black ink. The composition is centred on the leg, with a plain pale wall and a dark floor behind the feet.

Edna had planted the pines the year the council took the allotment, and by the time Owen came to clear the garden they stood higher than the back bedroom window. He had expected brambles and a shed full of rust. Instead he found the trees in a loose line along the bottom fence, each one a different height, as if she had planted them to keep count of something.

He rang the number on the seed tin, and a woman from the nursery came round on Thursday with a clipboard and a tape measure. She stood at the fence, squinted up, and said they were Scots pine, probably sown from cones off a hillside road, and that they would need thinning before the autumn gales. Owen nodded. He said nothing about the cones in the biscuit tin on the kitchen windowsill, the ones Edna had labelled in pencil with dates and places he did not recognise.
On the last evening he sat on the back step with a pair of secateurs across his knees and tried to decide which trunk to cut. The tallest leaned towards the neighbour's roof. The shortest had a crooked top like a question mark. He looked for a long time, then set the secateurs down and fetched the tin.
He pressed one cone into the soil at the foot of the wall, where the evening light would reach it first, and went inside to find a pencil.
