Pineapple tattoo on a finger

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small pineapple is tattooed on the side of a finger, built from stippled dots for the body and short, fine strokes for the leafy crown. The ink is dark, with a slightly purple cast that may come from the lighting. The pineapple sits diagonally across the finger, with the rest of the hand and a dark background filling the frame.

Dear Peg,

Mr Okafor from the fruit barrow on Carlisle Pier set one pineapple aside for me, bruised on one side and otherwise perfect, because I told him you had never tasted one. I have it wrapped in yesterday's Gazette on the shelf of the dressing room at the Winter Garden, and whenever Mr Lusk's band strikes up a foxtrot the whole room smells of it, sweet and a little like the inside of a hatbox.

The floor was being sanded again this afternoon, so I walked the length of it before the doors opened, counting the brass studs that run in rows between the boards. There are one hundred and twelve from the stage to the cloakroom, and on a good night a girl can lose her place in a quickstep if she looks down at them too long. Mr Lusk says the pattern is a copy of a ballroom in Vienna he saw before the war. I have never been to Vienna, and I don't think I will, so I make do with the studs.

I cut the fruit on the back step with my good penknife. The skin was tiny diamonds, each one a little raised dot with a sheen to it, and the flesh inside was the colour of the lamp in the bar. I gave the first slice to Mr Lusk's trumpet player, who said it tasted like the sun had been left out in a tin. I kept the crown, the spiky green top, and I have it standing in a jam jar of water on the windowsill, where it is sprouting roots like a small green hand reaching for something.

I am sending you the penknife's second slice in this letter, pressed flat between two pages. It will not keep, I know, but you always did like to see a thing before you believed it.

Your loving sister, Ivy
