Dotwork crescent moon on a finger

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a finger showing a crescent moon formed from stippled black dots, with three graduated dots placed above and to the side of it. The dots are used for both the outline and the shading of the crescent, giving a soft, textured edge. The image is black and grey, and the tattoo is centred on the finger against a plain, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The relay at Halden Shoal had been silent for eleven days when the signal came back as three pulses, spaced like a count. You were the only one awake on the night shift, so answering fell to you. You spent the first hour pacing the cold corridor with a printout of the old survey charts, the paper gone soft at the folds.

The charts were older than the station and older than the stations before it. Whoever first mapped the moon above the Shoal had no ink to spare for lines, so every ridge and crater was built from stipple, one dot set down beside the next until the edge of the terminator seemed to glow. The archivist who sent you the file had written in the margin that the surveyors called the crescent their most honest work, because a dot can't pretend to be more than it is.

The three pulses matched the beacon spacing from the Lantern chain, the one that was switched off when the tidal grid failed. You checked the timing twice, then a third time, because it made no sense for a dead chain to wake up in the same order it had gone dark. The last pulse arrived late, lingering a beat longer than the others, as if someone on the far end had hesitated.

You keyed three pulses back, slow and even, then opened the log and pressed one more dot onto the blank page beside the crescent.
