Butterfly tattoo on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed black and grey butterfly with patterned wings and fine antennae sits on the upper shoulder of a woman with blonde hair, whose face is cropped out of frame. The wings use dense hatching and shading to show texture and markings, with clean outlines. The plain cream background and soft natural light keep the focus on the tattoo against the pale skin and white lace top.

Old Tam Ferris kept his nets in the loft above the fish house at Skerrow, and every spring the marbled butterflies came over the water from the south, too tired to go round the headland. They settled on the drying lines and the tar barrels and once, memorably, on the sleeve of the minister's coat. Nobody in the fleet thought them lucky until the year the herring failed.

That spring the boats went out four nights running and came back with nothing but wet rope. Tam's daughter Isla sat on the harbour wall mending a torn mesh with a bone needle, and a pale butterfly with black chequered wings settled on the knot she was tying. She did not shoo it. She said, 'If you're hungry, there's salt on the steps,' and went back to her work.
The butterfly stayed. Each dusk it lifted off the mesh and flew west over the reef, and each morning it came back to the same place on the wall. On the fifth night Tam followed it in the dinghy, oars muffled with sacking, and the creature led him to a shoal of mackerel turning silver under the swell, a place no chart had ever marked. He came home with the hull low and his palms raw from the lines.
They say the fleet still keeps one rule: no one lets a butterfly drown on the deck. Isla kept the habit longer than anyone. When she died the boats went out with a folded net in the bow, and the men swore the wind turned to meet them at the reef.
