Pink flower vine tattoo on a foot

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A bare foot shows a tattoo of a black vine with curling tendrils, three pink five-petalled flowers with yellow centres, and several green leaves. The linework is solid black and the flowers and leaves are filled with flat colour, with some soft shading on the petals. The vine runs diagonally across the top of the foot from the toes side toward the ankle bone, against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy had the ladder against the south wall before the frost was off the coping, cursing the gale that had split the trellis in February. Her husband had nailed those laths up the year they married, and for thirty years nothing had grown on them but grey lichen and sparrows. Now a green rope hung off the bricks, its tendrils curled tight as watch springs, and she had no notion who had sown it.

Her son Tom said it was bindweed and wanted it pulled. She didn't argue. She climbed up with a pair of snips in her apron pocket and cut back the dead wood, and every time she snipped a tendril it sprang back to hold the next one, as if it had been waiting all winter for someone to tell it where to go.

By June the vine had reached the gate and started along the bench where her husband used to sit with his pipe. Three flowers opened on a single stem, five pink petals each, with a yolk of yellow at the middle like a small lamp left on in a window. Tom came round on Sunday, looked at them for a long while, and said nothing at all about bindweed.

She never found out who planted it. She did find, pressed flat inside an old seed catalogue in the shed, a flower the same colour as the ones on the wall, with a name written beside it in a hand she didn't recognise. She kept the catalogue on the windowsill and let the vine have the wall.
