Pink and grey bird with blue flowers
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A pink and grey bird sits among blue five-petal flowers with yellow centres and dark green leaves. Bold black outlines and flat fills with soft shading give it a classic traditional look, with grey feather detail across the wing. Colour ink dominates, and part of a heart and banner tattoo is visible at the right edge.

The galah had learned the Pride of Erin before he learned to keep his mouth shut, and on Saturday nights Nell Brody hung his cage from the rafters at Corrigan's Hall so the band could hear him over the saxophone. The shearers said it was bad luck to dance under a bird. Nell said they were welcome to dance under the gum trees if they didn't like it. Most nights he only whistled. Some nights he shouted the caller's words back at the floor, and the floor loved him for it.

Frank Dorrigan had been turning up since the wool clip came in, always near the door, always with his hat in both hands. He never asked her to dance. Instead he left a tin mug of bluebells from the creek bank on the cloakroom windowsill, the little five-petalled ones that went brown by morning. Nell pressed one into her hair each week and didn't say whose it was. The galah watched that windowsill with his head on one side.
On the last Saturday before the shearing team moved on, the band struck up a waltz slow enough to hear rain on the tin roof. Frank crossed the boards with his hat still in his hands. Before he could open his mouth, the galah dropped from the rafters onto the stage rail and shrieked, clear as a bell, 'Go on, then, Frank!' Half the hall turned. Frank went red to the ears, and Nell laughed so hard she missed the first step.
They danced until the lamps guttered and the band began packing up. On the steps outside, Frank tucked a fresh bluebell behind her ear, and from the cloakroom the galah called out one last time, as if he had been waiting all night to say it.
