Pink and purple roses on a shoulder blade

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A cluster of large roses in pink, magenta and lilac, with a rosebud at the top and a smaller bud near the lower edge, sits on the upper back over the shoulder blade. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients and soft highlights, and green leaves fade into the surrounding skin. The photo is taken from behind and shows tattoo ink bottles and framed artwork in the blurred studio background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother never let the roses inside, so I was the one who carried them up the back stairs to room six that August, a bucket of cuttings from the wall by the coal shed. Mrs Pell's husband had planted them the summer before he went to sea and never came back on the boat he'd sailed in. They climbed the brick in clumps, pink at the heart and lilac at the edges, and every August they came out in a crowd of heads so heavy the stems leaned over the gutter.

The lodger in room six was a cartographer called Mr Ashdown who drew the bay for the council, and he paid his rent in cash folded inside a Bible he never opened. He liked the roses. He asked me their names, and I didn't know any, so I made up names like Sunday Blush and Gull's Breath, and he wrote them in the margins of his survey sheets as if they were real. Every morning he sketched one bloom from the window, softening the petals with his wet thumb.

On the last Saturday of the month he gave me his sketchbook, forty pages of roses and not one of them the same. Then he left on the early bus without settling the final week, and Mrs Pell said the Bible was empty except for a folded tide table, which she burned in the range.

I still walk past the wall every August. The roses are there, lilac fading to pink where the rain runs down, and I pick one for the kitchen table without asking anybody.
