Anemone and poppy floral tattoo on shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A woman's shoulder and upper back carry a large floral tattoo built from red and purple anemones, a peach rose and clusters of white cow parsley, with a purple scabious bloom and green foliage below. The petals and leaves are shaded softly with smooth tonal gradients, giving a realistic, painterly finish. The flowers fill the frame in a rounded cluster, with the cropped chin visible at the top edge.

The anemones had been open since Tuesday, which Nell Carew took personally. She had kept them in the cold shed behind the chandlery, wrapped in wet newspaper, waiting for the north wind to drop so they would hold their colour on the barrow. Now the purple ones were showing their dark centres to every gull on the quay, and the red ones had gone the colour of brick dust at the edges. A man in a navy oilskin stood at the rail with his hands in his pockets, watching the trawlers come in.

'You're late,' she said, without looking up. 'Your order's been wrapped since Friday.' He had asked for a bouquet for the Thursday boat, the kind his mother used to pick from the lane above Gull Cottage: cow parsley gone lacy, a peach rose from the glasshouse, scabious the colour of a bruise. Nell had built it up in her apron pocket that morning, stem by stem, binding the cut ends in damp raffia so the water would not bleed away before the crossing.
He paid in coins that smelled of diesel. She told him the anemones would last until the tide turned and no longer, and that the trick with poppies was to singe the stems over a match so the sap stopped running. He said he would try it. She suspected he would forget, and the flowers would be drooping in a fisherman's cabin before dawn, which was how most things went in that harbour.
When the boats were tied up and the gulls had gone quiet, Nell packed the barrow and found one anemone left, its petals folded tight against the cold. She tucked it behind the slate by the lamp post where the coastal path began, the way she always did with the last of the stock, and walked home with the empty buckets knocking against her shins.
