Pink and teal roses on a leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
Two large roses, one pink and one teal, are tattooed on a leg, with shaded grey leaves filling the spaces between them. The petals are rendered with smooth shading, soft highlights and fine detail on the folds. The roses dominate the frame against bare skin, and a bathtub edge and a foot sit in the soft-focus background.

The brass band is already tuning up behind the Methodist hall when you reach the allotments, and Mr Haigh is on his knees at the end bed with a trowel he has sharpened twice this morning. He doesn't look up. He says the pink ones are for the front row of the show and the blue ones are for himself, because a rose should look like it has been somewhere.

He has spent eleven winters coaxing that grey-blue bloom out of the bed beside the coal shed. He feeds it cold tea and a pinch of his wife's bluing, and the leaves he shades with soot scraped from the old lamp room so they hold the dark. The judges have never once given him a rosette for it. He says that is the judges' problem.
The pit whistle goes at half eleven, one long note that rolls down the valley and stops every net curtain in the row. Mr Haigh stands up slowly, knees cracking, and wraps the pink rose in yesterday's newspaper. Take it to the lamp room door, he tells you. Lay it on the step where the men used to hang their lamps. Don't say anything to anyone.
By the time you reach the lamp room, rain has started, and the pink petals have bled grit into the wet newspaper. The blue one, which you have kept cupped in your hand the whole way, still looks as though it has only just come up from underground.
