Pink peony and leaves on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a large open peony in the upper area, with a second peony bud below it, surrounded by dark green leaves and a cluster of small purple flowers. The petals have bold dark outlines and soft pink and magenta shading, with a yellow-orange centre visible in the main bloom. The design fills the leg from the side, set against a pale pink wall and a tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The painted curtain had split again along the seam, straight through the heart of the biggest peony, and Mr Ansell stood over my sewing table turning his hat in his hands. Two horses had gone to a farm outside Doncaster. The lion had died in October. Nobody in Hull had bought tickets since the summer, but the curtain still had to go up on Saturday, because a show with no curtain is only a field.

I worked by the lamp with my mother's tin of silks open beside me. The petals were the easy part. I laid the pinks down in layers, the pale ones first, then the magenta at the edges where the light would catch them, and I gave the centre a dab of saffron where the stamens bunched like wet thread. Below the bloom I put a closed bud, still tight and undecided, and a scatter of little purple flowers that the trapeze girl, Rosa, had asked for so she would have something of home to look at from the rigging.

On Friday Mr Ansell found me still at it. He pointed at the bud. 'Take that out,' he said. 'Nobody comes to see a thing that hasn't opened.' I told him a bud is only a flower that has not yet been told it is finished. He looked at me the way he looked at the returned tickets, then left without another word, and I sewed the bud twice as firmly.

Saturday the house was half empty, but the curtain rose slow and bright, and the pink bloom hung over the ring with its dark leaves as if nothing had ever gone wrong. When we struck the tent that night, I folded it carefully so the peonies faced inward. In the lorry, in the dark, I felt for the bud with my thumb, still closed, still waiting for a spring that might come somewhere else.
