Pink and yellow flowers on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman's forearm, cropped at the hand and upper arm, shows a colourful floral tattoo. Large pink blooms with yellow centres sit near the elbow, with a yellow-green flower, smaller buds and dark green leaves running down towards the wrist. The shading is soft and the linework is fine, set against a pale, softly lit background.

Dear Ada, the fair has come to Hexham Green and the big top smells of wet sawdust and the candy floss man's sugar. I'm writing from the back of the flower stall, which Mr Pruett calls a botanical exhibit and which is really two trestles, a bucket of ragged camellias and a tin of tea. The camellias were the only thing that survived the rail journey from Ripon. Half the roses arrived as brown paper.

Yesterday a boy from the ring-toss came sniffing round, wanting something for a girl who had thrown him over at the dodgems. I gave him a pink camellia, the heavy kind with a yellow middle like a dropped coin, and told him it would last a week if he kept it out of the sun. He asked if it was real. I said everything on this field is real, even the lies. He went off looking pleased with himself and carrying the flower like a lit match.
Thursday's rain flattened the canvas and flooded the bucket, and then in the night every closed bud on the stall opened at once. By morning the whole tent smelled like a church on a feast day. Pruett wanted to double the price and call them rare imports. I told him they were rare enough without his help, and he sulked off to fix the generator.
I've pressed the best one into the back of this letter. It will be flat and papery by the time you read it, but the colour should hold, and that is more than most of us manage on the road. Write back to the post office in Harrogate. I'll collect it when the fair moves on.
