Small black outline heart tattoo in fine line style on the forearm near the wrist.

Small outline heart on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn as a single thin black outline, with no shading or fill, sits on the forearm near the wrist. A hand with a gold filigree ring rests against white fabric in the same frame. The neutral background and soft lighting keep the focus on the small tattoo at the upper right of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ines, the cartographers at Halden Rock have finished the survey of the eastern ice shelf, and the chart came back with one mark nobody can explain. Someone in the original crew drew a heart in the margin, just a single thin line with no shading, the way you used to draw them on the back of my school atlas. The clerk who filed it swears it was not there when the sheet left the printer.

I took the page down to the archive vault with the magnifier you gave me. The heart sits in the corner of a table of core samples, in the same pencil as the grid references, and it points at a spot roughly forty metres from where the second drill failed. I have spent three nights staring at it. The author did not sign it. The only other writing on the page is a note in the same hand: 'Keep the line light. We can go back for the rest.'

I pulled the crew manifest. Nobody on it had a name like yours, which I suppose I expected, since you have always said I invent my own company. But there was a radio operator called Tove Adair who logged out in the spring and never logged back in. Her locker still holds a pencil case and a folded map with the same heart in one corner, outlined so faintly it could be a crease.

I am sending this on Thursday's supply run. Come up on the next shuttle if you can, and bring the good pencils. We will walk out to the ridge together and see whether the ice is still keeping whatever Tove was so careful to mark. Keep the line light, as she wrote. Yours, Mara.
