Pink anemone flowers on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows several open anemone-style flowers with leaves and stems wrapping around the outer forearm, shown from the wrist to just below the elbow. Bold black outlines define the petals and centres, with black shading in the flower cores and leaves. The petals are filled with soft pink and peach wash, and the arm is photographed against a dark grey top.

Behind the old byre, where the dung heap steamed, something had pushed up through the crust. Five stems, the leaves dark as wet slate, and on each a flower open wide in the cold, its petals the pink of a lamb's inner ear, with black hearts like the eyes of crows. Her grandmother had called them wind-flowers and said they only opened when someone was owed a kindness.
Ada knew she owed nobody but the lambing pens. Still she knelt, broke the ice on the trough, and carried water to the roots in her cupped hands until her fingers ached red. The next morning the flowers had turned their faces toward the farmhouse, and the cracked pane in the kitchen had a bloom of frost on it shaped like petals.
The fox took the hens that week and did not come back. The thaw arrived a fortnight early. When the neighbour's boy drove the cart up the lane in March, he found Ada asleep in the sun against the byre wall, and the ground around her was full of pink, every stem opened wide, as if the winter had only been a long breath held in.
