The ovens were the only warm thing on Sallow Street at half four, and Mrs Okonedo had me scoring the tops of the tin loaves before my eyes had properly opened. That was when the butterfly came in under the back door, the way the cold did every morning, and settled on the flour sack beside the scales.

It was pink, which made no sense in a bakery in February, and its wings had black edges dotted with white, as if someone had stitched them with a very fine needle. I stood still with the lame in my hand. It opened and shut twice. Then it lifted, and I saw the shadow it threw against the whitewashed wall behind, dark and soft, a second butterfly fixed beneath the first, the way the shadow of a cooling loaf sits on the board.

Mrs Okonedo came through with a tray of rye and stopped. She didn't ask what I was gawping at. She only said the sponge would sink if I kept at it, and went back to her ovens. When I looked again the wings were gone, and the wall was bare except for a pale patch where the sun would reach later.

The shadow stayed, though. For a week I checked the wall before I unlocked the shop, and each morning I found it there, a smudge of grey where something pink had been resting. I stopped asking where it had gone. Some things leave their dark behind so you know they were really there.
