Pink flamingo tattoo on upper back

Dotwork · Back · Colour · Photo

A pink flamingo stands with its head turned back over its wing, shown in profile with its long legs extending downward. The body is built from fine stippled dots and patterned linework, with the wing carrying denser ornamental texture. The single colour is a soft pink against the skin, and the tattoo sits on the upper back with straps of a light floral top visible at the edge of the frame.

The ovens were already ticking when Dolores first handed me a cocktail stick dipped in pink food colouring. It was four in the morning, flour to my elbows, and she told me a flamingo was nothing but a great many small decisions. Stipple the neck. Don't hurry the wing, because a hurried wing looks like a kite.

We had a tray of rye proving under damp cloths, and the light past the shutters was still the colour of cold tea. I did the body one dot at a time while she shaped the morning's bloomers. The customers would come in at six for the bread and leave with a biscuit each, a flamingo on every one, because Dolores had a cousin who sold tiles in Ramsgate and a grudge against plain shortbread.

The mistake came on the Friday. My wrist had gone soft from so much dotting, and the neck bent the wrong way, the head turned back over the wing as if checking whether anyone had followed. Dolores looked at it for a long moment, said nothing, then reached over and drew one curl of ornament across the wing so the error became part of the pattern. 'Birds do that,' she said. 'They look back at what they've left.'

Next morning the biscuit tin was empty except for that one, lying face down in the flour on the shelf. I didn't throw it out. When the sun came up over the harbour wall, it was the only thing in the shop still standing on one leg.
