Pink rose sprig on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A bouquet of pink roses, rosebuds and green leaves curves diagonally across the shoulder, with small clusters of red-brown berries trailing from the top and sides. The linework is soft and the shading is gradual, giving the flowers a painted, vintage botanical look. Warm colours sit against the pale skin and plain cream background, with the subject photographed from behind.

The seed catalogue had come from Mrs Pargeter's nursery in Ashford, and the rose on its cover was the exact pink of a child's cheek after the cold. Harriet pinned the plate above the potting bench and told herself it was only a reference. Her father had painted roses for forty years in a close-cropped hand that never once blurred a petal, and she had inherited the brushes, the paper, and the habit of being corrected.

All that March she painted sprigs for Mr Lowe's almanac, the same bouquet again and again: a full bloom at the centre, two buds leaning in like gossips, a sprawl of rowan berries trailing off the stem as if someone had dropped them. Mr Lowe paid by the dozen and never looked at the work. Harriet looked at it every night, holding each sheet to the lamp, and every night the berries seemed a shade too brown.
In April the glasshouse frost took the old bush by the wall. She went out at dawn with the spade, expecting dead wood, and found instead a single rose, pink as the catalogue, pushed up through the roots as if it had been waiting for permission. She cut it, took it back to the bench, and painted it without a single correction, berries and all. When Mr Lowe came for the proofs he held the sheet up to the window for a long moment and said nothing, which from him was praise.
