Paper aeroplane with dotted trail on collarbone

Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A small paper aeroplane sits on the skin with a trail of tiny dots curving behind it toward the upper right. The plane is drawn in thin black linework with a soft blue fill on one side, and the trail is built from fine stippled dots. The pale, softly lit skin keeps the small design clear.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, I still have blue biro on the side of my hand from the seating plan, and I am not going to wash it off until you have seen the photographs. Tom's brother folded the first plane out of the order of service while the vicar was still reading the banns, and by the time the bride came down the path there were eleven of them, every one launched from the lych gate and sailing over the hedge into the Hendersons' orchard.

The little blue one was the odd one out. Nobody had seen Ruth fold it. She had been sitting on the churchyard wall in her good shoes, and when I asked what she was doing she said she was writing a letter to a man she had decided not to marry, years ago, and that the trick was to make the letter fly so it could not be handed back. She gave it a push with two fingers. It went low, then caught the wind off the river, and the trail of pinpricks she had made with a hatpin seemed to hang in the air behind it, curving up towards the willows.

Mum said it was the sort of thing you would never see at a wedding in Leeds, and she was right, but I think that is why I loved it. Everyone kept looking up. Even the photographer lowered his camera for a moment and simply watched.

I do not know where the plane landed. Nobody went to look. I think that is the right ending: a day that went the way it was meant to, and a plane that carried on without us towards somewhere we will never be told. Write back and tell me what Tom's brother did with the last sheet of paper. I have a feeling he saved it.

Love, Bea
